ARTISTIC DIRECTORS
Seraphim Trio
Seraphim Trio is one of Australia’s most acclaimed chamber music groups, as well as being a lifelong friendship. Formed in Adelaide in 1995, the group has enjoyed an unusually longstanding collaboration, with its current membership – Helen Ayres, Tim Nankervis and Anna Goldsworthy – dating from 1998.
Seraphim is acclaimed for its encyclopedic projects such as its marathon performances of the complete Beethoven Trios, and the recording project The Trio Through Time, tracking the evolution of the genre in recordings of twelve piano trios from Mozart to Sculthorpe. The trio is also celebrated for its inventive collaborations with artists as diverse as violinist Andrew Haveron and street artist Peter Drew. In 2019, Seraphim’s recording with Paul Kelly, James Ledger, and Alice Keath, Thirteen Ways to Look at Birds, won the ARIA award for Best Classical Album.
Seraphim enjoyed formative study with Hatto Beyerle in Hanover, and remains dedicated to the rhetorical traditions of chamber music. It is also committed to nourishing the ecosystem of Australian music, through its flagship concert series and recordings, regional touring, educational workshops, and new format performances including audience immersions. The trio has commissioned a library of Australian chamber music, with recent commissions by Brett Dean, Jakub Jankowski, and Richard Mills, and welcomes enquiries from musicians who wish to explore this repertoire.

Anna Goldsworthy is an award-winning pianist, writer, and festival director. She is currently Dean of the Elder Conservatorium of Music and School of Performing Arts at Adelaide University of Adelaide, and incoming Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music in 2027.
As a pianist, Anna performs extensively throughout Australia and internationally, as a soloist and collaborator. She is a founding member of Seraphim Trio, whose most recent recordings are the ARIA-award-winning Thirteen Ways to Look at Birds for Decca, with Paul Kelly, James Ledger, and Alice Keath, and the ABC Classics set Trio Through Time for ABC Classics.
As a writer, Anna was awarded Newcomer of the Year at the Australian Book Industry Awards for her debut memoir, Piano Lessons, released in Australia, North America, Germany, Korea and Vietnam, and shortly to appear in China. Her most recent book, the novel Melting Moments, was released in 2020. She is the author of several works for the stage, including the libretto of the Graeme Koehne’s opera A Christmas Carol, premiered by Victorian Opera in December 2022. Her stage play, Welcome to Your New Life was premiered by the State Theatre Company of South Australia in November 2023.
Anna has directed numerous festivals, including the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, the Coriole Music Festival, and the Music and Mountains Festival in Queenstown, New Zealand. In 2024, she delivered a Boyer Lecture for ABC radio and television, on the future of classical music.
Highlights for 2026 include performances throughout Australia, New Zealand and China, collaborating with Seraphim Trio and Ensemble Lumen, and distinguished musicians such as cellist Simon Cobcroft and tenor Kyle Stegall. Anna’s new Quarterly Essay The God We Made: The Threat and Promise of Artificial Intelligence is released in June 2026.

Helen Ayres is a Doctoral graduate of the University of Melbourne and current violin teacher at the Open Music Academy, University of Adelaide. She is a core Leader of the Adelaide Hills Chamber players and has appeared as guest with numerous Australian ensembles including Flinders Quartet, Syzygy, the Australian Octet and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Helen held a permanent position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and has since performed in England, Scotland, Germany, Austria and China with the BBC Scottish Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestra. As a founding member of Seraphim trio Helen has commissioned new works by Brett Dean, James Ledger and Adelaide’s Jakob Jankowski and has performed at various Australian festivals with musicians Paul Kelly, Lucinda Collins. Konstantin Shamray and Andrew Haveron. Helen is regularly broadcast on ABC and MBS-FM radio stations and is also a presenter for Radio 5MBS-FM in Adelaide.
Helen is passionate about increasing performance opportunities for young Australian musicians. To this end she is appears on the board of Recitals Australia, Radio 5MBS-FM and convenes the String and Ensemble Divisions of the Adelaide Eisteddfod Society.

Cellist, Timothy Nankervis, is a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has won numerous awards for cello solo, and for chamber music as a member of the acclaimed Seraphim Trio. As an active chamber musician, Tim has performed extensively with Seraphim Trio nationally and internationally. He also performs regularly as a guest artist with various ensembles.
Tim has performed widely throughout Australia as a soloist, and has broadcast regularly for the ABC and MBS-FM radio stations across the country. He has performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto and Brahms Double Concerto with orchestras in Sydney and Queensland, and he has performed as soloist with Orchestra Victoria, playing Tchaikovsky’s ‘Rococo’ Variations.
Tim performs regularly with the Australian World Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and he has performed casually with the Melbourne, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s. He has taught cello and chamber music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and tutors regularly for Sydney Youth Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra.
Tim completed his Bachelor of Music degree in Sydney with Lois Simpson and graduated from Melbourne University with a Masters of Music degree with Nelson Cooke. He has also studied at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, and in London with William Pleeth and Raphael Wallfisch.

1ST OF 3 NIGHTS AT SPICERS HIDDEN VALE
BRISBANE DOMESTIC AIRPORT & ROMA STREET STATION TO GRANDCHESTER, CONCERT I (D):
Guests are collected by private air-conditioned coach. The coach will make one stop at Brisbane Domestic Airport at 12:30pm and a second stop at Roma Street Station at 1:00pm. We then travel to Spicers Hidden Vale located in the picturesque Lockyer Valley.
After arriving at Spicers Hidden Vale and checking into our rooms, we gather on the terrace of the Laidley Room with its spectacular views of the surrounding bush. There we are welcomed with drinks and canapés, to relax us after our day of travelling.
Pianist and Seraphim Trio member Anna Goldsworthy then begins our musical exploration for the weekend into Beethoven’s Piano Trios.
In the early evening we gather for pre-concert drinks on the festoon-lit Barn Forecourt, before enjoying the first of our exclusive performances from our piano trio for the weekend: Seraphim Trio, comprising Anna Goldsworthy, Helen Ayres and Timothy Nankervis.

Following the concert, we enjoy the first of our three gourmet meals together, with a sumptuous dinner in Homage Restaurant. We have the wonderful opportunity of being joined by the musicians for this welcome meal.
After dinner, guests may like to move over to the cosy Homestead Bar for a seat by the fire to discuss this evening’s performance, or return to their well-appointed and comfortable rooms ahead of a day full of music tomorrow.

2ND OF 3 NIGHTS AT SPICERS HIDDEN VALE

Following breakfast overlooking the surrounding valley, we gather for our second presentation on the theme of this weekend’s music, Beethoven’s incredible piano trios, this morning hosted by violinist Helen Ayres.
Following our morning lecture, we move back to the Barn where we enjoy the second of our exclusive performances, paired with a discussion with our musicians.

After our morning presentation, we enjoy our fourth concert with both a wonderful performance and a conversation with our incredible musicians. After the concert, time is allowed for lunch at the hotel.
