DAY 1 | SUNDAY 22 AUGUST 2027

1ST OF 5 NIGHTS AT HYPERION HOTEL SALZBURG

TRANSFER FROM MUNICH CENTRAL STATION AND MUNICH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO SALZBURG, ARRIVE SALZBURG (D):

There is a coach transfer from Munich Central Station at 11:00am and Munich International Airport at 12:00pm to Salzburg, or guests can arrive independently in Salzburg if they wish. Hotel check-in is at 3:00pm and we recommend arriving at this time if guests are not using the coach transfer from Munich.

We arrive and check in at our hotel, the 5-star Hyperion Hotel Salzburg, conveniently located in the heart of Salzburg's Neustadt district. In the evening, we meet our fellow guests with a welcome drinks reception, and we then depart for a delicious dinner of local specialities in the heart of Altstadt Salzburg. Our Tour Leader, Graham Abbott, will outline what is to come during the tour.

DAY 2 | MONDAY 23 AUGUST 2027

SALZBURG FESTIVAL (B):

This morning, following our talk on the music we will hear today, we attend a morning concert as part of the Salzburg Festival.

SALZBURG FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE 1

Following the morning concert, the afternoon is free to explore the beautiful Old Town of Salzburg. You might take the opportunity to head to the top of the Mönchsberg for a visit to Hohensalzburg Fortess, one of Europe’s best preserved and largest medieval castles. You can reach the castle via a 1-minute trip in the FestungsBahn (the funicular railway) or a rather steep 15-minute walk from the base of the mountain. Whichever route you choose, the trip affords spectacular views of Salzburg and its baroque towers.

If you are looking to stay a little closer to the ground, you might like to visit Mozart’s Birthplace, located in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. A must-see for Mozart fans, the house where Mozart was born in 1756, and where his childhood violin, clavichord, letters and documents are amongst the many items on display, is one of the most visited museums in Austria.

This evening, we attend our second performance at the Salzburg Festival.

DAY 3 | TUESDAY 24 AUGUST 2027

EXPLORING SALZBURG & SALZBURG FESTIVAL (B):

This morning, our Tour Leader, Graham Abbott, adds to our pleasure of this evening’s performance with an informative talk about the music we will hear.

Following our morning talk, we set out on a guided walking tour of Salzburg to begin our exploration of this fascinating city. Located between the Salzach River and the surrounding mountains, the Old Town is rich in buildings from medieval times to the 20th-century, including many examples of beautiful gothic and baroque architecture. It is an attractive and historically important area which has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour ends at the ancient Benedictine Abbey of St Peter, the oldest monastery with a continuous history since its foundation in 696. The present-day Romanesque abbey church at the northern foot of the Mönchsberg, a hill in the centre of Salzburg, was erected from about 1130 onwards.

Our tour ends at Salzburg Cathedral which, with its prominent two-tower facade and its massive structure, dominates the image of the old city. Following the tour, time is allowed to attend an organ recital at the cathedral, or further explore the old city.

In the evening, we attend our third performance in the prestigious Salzburg Festival.

DAY 4 | WEDNESDAY 25 AUGUST 2027

4TH OF 5 NIGHTS AT HYPERION HOTEL SALZBURG

DAY TRIP TO KÖNIGSSEE & SALZBURG FESTIVAL (B):

Following our morning talk on the music with Graham, we depart Salzburg for the scenic drive across the Austrian border into Germany, to the serene and stunning Königssee. Lake Königssee, with its emerald green colour, nestled at the foot of the imposing eastern wall of Mount Watzmann, is one of nature's true masterpieces. On arrival, we board one of the small electric boats for the peaceful crossing to St Bartholomew’s Church. On the journey silence is requested by the captain, and a boatman then plays his trumpet to lure out the world-famous Königssee echo from the steep rock face.

We depart our boat at the 17th-century Church of St Bartholomew, a pilgrimage spot which is renowned for its wine-red onion domes set against the backdrop of the Watzmann Mountains. Time is allowed to look inside the church and to stroll around the peaceful walking tracks, taking in the incredible views on offer. There is also a snack shack and a restaurant for an independent lunch with a view.

Following our time at St Bartholomew’s, we board our boat for the return journey to the northern end of the Königssee, and then our return drive to Salzburg.

This evening, we attend our fourth performance at the Salzburg Festival.

DAY 5 | THURSDAY 26 AUGUST 2027

5TH OF 5 NIGHTS AT HYPERION HOTEL SALZBURG

EXCURSION TO SCHLOSS HELLBRUNN & SALZBURG FESTIVAL (B, D):

This morning, we set out for the short drive to Schloss Hellbrunn. Built in the 17th-century by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus, Schloss Hellbrunn was primarily intended for enjoyment and recreation. We enjoy a guided tour through its spacious, landscaped grounds, which feature the unique and entertaining Wasserspiele (trick fountains).

Following our visit to Schloss Hellbrunn, we return to Salzburg for our final performance at the festival.

DAY 6 | FRIDAY 27 AUGUST 2027

1ST OF 5 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DIE WÄLDERIN, MELLAU

SALZBURG TO MELLAU VIA INNSBRUCK (B, D):

Following breakfast at our hotel in Salzburg, we check out and depart for the city of Innsbruck. Nestled amidst majestic peaks, this breathtaking city offers a unique combination of nature, history, and culture. On arrival, we will enjoy a short guided walking tour of the historic sights in the centre of the Old Town, along with an introduction to the history of this Tyrolean city.

After our guided tour, time is allowed for an independent lunch, before we continue on our way to Mellau.

On arrival, we check in to our comfortable hotel which will be our base for the next five nights, Hotel die Wälderin. The Vorarlberg region is located in the westernmost part of Austria, nestled between Lake Constance and the Alps, neighbouring Germany, Switzerland and the principality of Liechtenstein. This small, picturesque region is known for its culture, food and stunning natural scenery.

This evening, we depart for one of the region’s welcoming restaurants for a delicious dinner.

DAY 7 | SATURDAY 28 AUGUST 2027

2ND OF 5 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DIE WÄLDERIN, MELLAU

MELLAU & THE SCHWARZENBERG SCHUBERTIADE (B):

This morning, we enjoy a talk on the music we will hear today and tomorrow from our Tour Leader Graham Abbott.

Time is then allowed to explore the picturesque surrounding area of Mellau. On the hotel’s doorstep is the cable car to the Mellau-Damüls ski and hiking area, and our accommodation includes the Guest Card Bregenzerwald & Großes Walsertal, which gives guests unlimited rides on the cable car to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding region.

Alternatively, you might like to relax in the hotel’s wellness area following our busy travel yesterday, which includes a sauna, a hot tub and an indoor and outdoor pool.

In the early evening, we depart for the nearby village of Schwarzenberg for the first of our seven performances at the 2027 Schwarzenberg Schubertiade.

The Schubertiade in Vorarlberg is considered the most important Schubert festival in the world, presenting about 80 events annually at both Schwarzenberg and Hohenems, and welcoming around 40,000 attendees each year. For the Schwarzenberg Schubertiade, the performances take place in the beautiful Angelika Kauffmann Hall. This handsome timber-frame structure, built in 2001, seats 600 guests and overlooks the idyllic mountain pastures of Schwarzenberg. It boasts a unique ambience and an exquisite acoustic, praised by artists, audiences and critics alike.

4TH OF 5 NIGHTS AT HOTEL DIE WÄLDERIN, MELLAU

EXCURSION TO LINDAU & THE SCHWARZENBERG SCHUBERTIADE (B):

This morning, we depart for the nearby city of Bregenz, situated on the shore of the Bodensee. From there, we take a ferry trip on spectacular Lake Constance, which, fed by the Rhine River, borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We alight at the picturesque German island-town of Lindau. Here we enjoy a private guided tour which leads us along narrow cobblestone streets to Medieval merchant houses, and which explains a little of the fascinating history of the town, pointing out such features as the 12th-century Mangenturm, the former watchtower near the harbour front, and the Gothic Altes Rathaus, the Old Town Hall, with its beautiful painted façade.

Following the tour, time is allowed for further exploration Lindau’s beautiful Aldstadt and to enjoy an independent lunch. Following our visit, we return to our hotel for a rest ahead of this evening’s concert.

Before departing for Schwarzenberg, we enjoy a pre-concert talk from Graham Abbott about the concert we will hear this evening, featuring Schubert’s mighty Octet.
