TOUR LEADER

DR Jack Stephens

Sydney-born conductor, bass, and artistic director Dr Jack Stephens is the Director of Music at St Paul’s College, Sydney. Recognised for his “artistic brilliance” (TheMusicTrust), he has led the Choir of St Paul’s College in “faultless performances” and “exquisite musical beauty” (CanberraCityNews, 2023).

Recent highlights in 2025 include residencies conducting services at Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral London, Canterbury Cathedral, and York Minster, as well as presenting concerts in Paris at Saint-Eustache, La Madeleine, and Saint-Sulpice.

Jack has performed as a soloist with the Choir of Christ Church St Laurence, Bach Akademie Australia, Victoria Chorale, the Albury Chamber Music Festival, the Canberra International Music Festival, and the Four Winds Festival Bermagui. He was also an Associate Artist with The Song Company. Jack completed his doctorate on the staging of Bach’s Passions, supervised by Erin Helyard, and is the Artistic Director of the Sydney Cantata Project, which regularly presents concerts featuring the lesser-known cantatas of J.S. Bach with Australia’s leading early-music specialists.

Jack has directed Purcell’s complete operas, including The Fairy Queen (2023), Dido and Aeneas (2022, with Sally-Anne Russell, Andrew Goodwin, and Celeste Lazarenko), and King Arthur (2021, with Peter Cousens). In 2024, he directed the Australian premiere of Lampe’s The Dragon of Wantley  with The Muffat Collective and Peter Coleman-Wright AO.

Jack regularly gives pre-concert talks for the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Hayllar Music Tours and MusicaViva, produces and directs Australia’s longest-running show - Victoriana!, and is a scholar of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 | THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER 2026

1ST OF 4 NIGHTS AT MÖVENPICK HOTEL HOBART

ARRIVE HOBART AND TASMANIAN CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL (D):

Guests arrive at Mövenpick Hotel, a 4-star hotel located in the heart of picturesque Hobart, which offers convenient access to the best landmarks and attractions in Hobart. Check-in is at 2:00pm, and we recommend arriving at this time.

We meet at 3:30pm for welcome drinks to meet our Tour Leader, Dr Jack Stephens, and fellow guests. This is followed by a talk about the music we will hear this evening.

We depart the hotel and take a short 10-minute journey by private coach to historic Battery Point, specifically to St George’s Church, whose luminous Georgian interior will be the venue for the first concert of the festival.

This morning begins with a talk by Jack Stephens about the music we will hear in today’s concerts. This will be followed an In-Conversation with violinist, Emily Sun, hosted by Jack Stephens. After the In-Conversation, we enjoy a delicious lunch.

In the early afternoon, we attend our second concert of the festival in the Ian Potter Recital Hall in Hedberg Arts Centre, one of Tasmania’s most ambitious cultural and arts infrastructure projects.

After the morning concert, you might like to make the most of the hotel’s location by exploring this popular district of Hobart. One very enjoyable activity could be to visit Salamanca Market, Tasmania’s most popular attraction. Situated near Hobart’s picturesque waterfront, this lively outdoor market is held only on Saturdays when more than 300 stalls appear, selling arts, crafts, jewellery, fresh food and produce, collectables and homewares.

In the afternoon, we return to the Ian Potter Recital Hall for our fifth performance.

In the early evening, we travel by private coach to St George’s Church at Battery Point for a 5:30pm reception hosted by the Festival. This is followed by the Festival’s sixth concert.

After our final concert, we travel by private coach the short distance to Hobart’s Royal Botanic Gardens for a delicious finale lunch, arranged by the Festival, which will celebrate some of Tasmania’s best produce as well as the finest local wines.

After lunch, we return by private coach to our hotel.

On our return to the hotel, we enjoy farewell drinks to round off our delightful long weekend.
