Itinerary
Itinerary
1ST OF 4 NIGHTS AT MÖVENPICK HOTEL HOBART
ARRIVE HOBART AND TASMANIAN CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL (D):
Guests arrive at Mövenpick Hotel, a 4-star hotel located in the heart of picturesque Hobart which offers convenient access to the best landmarks and attractions in Hobart. Check-in is at 2:00pm and we recommend arriving at this time.
We meet at 3:30pm for welcome drinks to meet our Tour Leader, Jack Stephens, and fellow guests. This is followed by a talk about the music we will hear this evening.
We depart the hotel and take a short 5-minute walk to the Hedberg Arts Centre, one of Tasmania’s most ambitious cultural and arts infrastructure projects, to attend our first concert of the festival in the Ian Potter Recital Hall. The opening concert will be a dazzling display of pianism by two outstanding Australian pianists: Aura Go and Ian Munro. They have jointly conceived an exciting program of lesser-known works for four-hands at a single Steinway, encompassing familiar works by Schubert and Rachmaninov with an evocative re-imagining of Russian folk songs by Ekaterina Komalkova, receiving its Tasmanian premiere at the festival.
CONCERT I - IAN POTTER RECITAL HALL, 6:00pm
Franz Schubert Lebensstürme, D.947
Adolf Jensen Abendmusik, Op. 59
Ekaterina Komalkova Russian National Songs (selections)
Sergei Rachmaninoff Capriccio bohemian, Op. 12
Aura Go piano
Ian Munro piano
After the concert we enjoy a delicious dinner before returning to the hotel.
2ND OF 4 NIGHTS AT MÖVENPICK HOTEL HOBART
TASMANIAN CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL (B):
This morning will begin with a talk by Jack Stephens about the music we will hear today. We then stroll back to the Ian Potter Recital Hall for our second Festival performance.
String Theorem, who made such an impact at the 2024 festival, return to present a rarely-heard gem by Hungarian composer Dohnányi, his so-called Serenade, in fact an extended work for string trio. They will then be joined by festival guest Ian Munro in the glorious piano quartet by Schumann, a work which sits in the shadow of the composer’s famous piano quintet, but deserves to be as widely-performed and revered.
CONCERT II - IAN POTTER RECITAL HALL, 11:00am
Ernst von Dohnányi Serenade in C major, Op. 10
Robert Schumann Piano quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47
String Theorem:
Ji Won Kim violin
Caleb Wright viola
Nicholas McManus cello
Ian Munro piano
Time is then allowed for an independent lunch, and at 3:00pm, we enjoy the third Festival concert. Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve, current principal with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and keyboard collaborator Aura Go have conceived an original interleaving of works by contemporary Finnish composers with movements from Beethoven sonatas, with a short gem by Webern to add some piquancy. This is a program which throws established ideas on their head and presents amazing music in ways which will stimulate and delight.
CONCERT III - IAN POTTER RECITAL HALL, 3:00pm
Lisa Illean ever-weaver
Helvi Leiviskä Selection of Songs arranged for cello and piano
Ludwig van Beethoven Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69:
I. Allegro, ma non tanto
II. Scherzo. Allegro molto
Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 5 in D major, Op. 102, No. 2:
II. Adagio con molto sentimento d'affetto
Anton Webern Three Little Pieces, Op. 11
Ludwig van Beethoven Cello Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 5
IV. Rondo. Allegro
Timo-Veikko Valve cello
Aura Go piano
This evening, we return once more to the Ian Potter Rectial Hall for our third and final performance of the day. This concert introduces first-time festival guests, the Australian String Quartet, who begin in less well-known territory with a rare performance of the lyrical piano quintet by American Amy Beach, who stood out for her determination and talent in a traditionally male-dominated domain a century ago. The concert concludes with Schubert’s string quartet Death and the Maiden. Needing little introduction, it is possibly the most popular of all string quartets with its passionate melodies, exhilarating energy and unstoppable momentum.
CONCERT IV - IAN POTTER RECITAL HALL, 8:00pm
Amy Beach Piano Quintet, Op. 67
Franz Schubert String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D.810, Death and the Maiden
Australian String Quartet:
Dale Bartrop violin
Francesca Hiew violin
Christopher Cartlidge viola
Michael Dahlenburg cello
Aura Go piano

TASMANIAN CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL (B, Reception):
This morning begins with a talk by Jack Stephens about the music we will hear in today’s concerts.
Today the festival moves its base to historic Battery Point, specifically to St George’s Church whose luminous Georgian interior will be the venue for two concerts performed by the Australian String Quartet.

Stefanie Farrands viola

This morning begins with a talk by Jack about the music we will hear in the festival’s final concert.

Overlooking the broad estuary of the Huon River, the Palais Theatre has been lovingly returned to community use over the last decades and will provide the venue for the festival’s grand finale.
The festival finale turns back four centuries for music for six solo voices and renaissance orchestra featuring extracts from Symphoniae Sacrae of Schütz and Gabrieli, the Selva Morale et Spirituale by Monteverdi and works by Cavalli, Weckmann and Schop.
