ANNA GOLDSWORTHY

Professor Anna Goldsworthy is Director of the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide, and an award-winning pianist, writer, and festival director. As a pianist, Anna performs extensively throughout Australia and internationally. She is a founding member of Seraphim Trio, whose most recent recordings are the ARIA-award-winning Thirteen Ways to Look at Birds for Decca, with Paul Kelly, James Ledger, and Alice Keath, and the ABC Classics set Trio Through Time for ABC Classics.

ANNA GOLDSWORTHY - Artistic Director & PIANO

Professor Anna Goldsworthy is Director of the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide, and an award-winning pianist, writer, and festival director. As a pianist, Anna performs extensively throughout Australia and internationally. She is a founding member of Seraphim Trio, whose most recent recordings are the ARIA-award-winning Thirteen Ways to Look at Birds for Decca, with Paul Kelly, James Ledger, and Alice Keath, and the ABC Classics set Trio Through Time for ABC Classics.

As a writer, Anna was awarded Newcomer of the Year at the Australian Book Industry Awards for her debut memoir, Piano Lessons, released in Australia, North America, Germany, Korea and Vietnam, and shortly to appear in China. Her most recent book, the novel Melting Moments, was released in 2020. She is the author of several works for the stage, including the libretto of the Graeme Koehne’s opera A Christmas Carol, premiered by Victorian Opera in December 2022.

Anna has directed many festivals, most recently including the 2022 Coriole Music Festival, and the 2022 Hayllar Music and Mountains Festival in Queenstown, New Zealand. In 2022, Anna was also co-curator of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s She Speaks festival with Anne Cawrse, and the PianoLab festival with Anne Wiberg. In 2023, she performs throughout Australia with Seraphim Trio, and collaborates with musicians including Andrew Haveron and Konstantin Shamray. Her stage play, Welcome to Your New Life, will be premiered by the State Theatre Company of South Australia in November.

KONSTANTIN SHAMRAY - PIANO

Described as an exhilarating performer with faultless technique and fearless command of the piano, Australian based pianist Konstantin Shamray enjoys performing on an international level with the world’s leading orchestras and concert presenters. In 2008, Konstantin burst onto the concert scene when he won First Prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition. He is the first and only competitor to date in the 40 years of the competition to win both First and People’s Choice Prizes, in addition to six other prizes. He then went on to win First Prize at the 2011 Klavier Olympiade in Bad Kissingen, Germany, and, he was awarded the festival’s coveted Luitpold Prize for ‘outstanding musical achievements’.

Since then, Konstantin performs extensively throughout the world. In Australia recent and future season highlights include engagements with the Queensland Symphony, West Australian Symphony and regularly with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra with whom he enjoys a special relationship. Recently Konstantin undertook a prestigious nationwide tour with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and last season with Musica Viva with players of ANAM directed by Sophie Rowell. Outside of Australia, he has performed with the Russian National Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi, Orchestre National de Lyon, Prague Philharmonia, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and the Calgary Philharmonic.

Chamber music plays a strong role in Konstantin’s musical career and collaborations include tours with the Australian String Quartet, the Australian Piano Quartet, Kristof Barati, Andreas Brantelid, Richard Tognetti and Li Wei Qin. Konstantin enjoyed his debut collaboration with the Southern Cross Soloists recently, and, he also enjoys regular appearances at the Adelaide Festival, International Piano Series in Adelaide, the Melbourne Recital Centre and UKARIA Cultural Centre. Further afield, Konstantin has enjoyed critical acclaim at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, the Bochum Festival in Germany, the Mariinsky International Piano Festival and the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg. Konstantin is Lecturer in Piano at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide.

Lorina Gore - Soprano

Australian soprano Lorina Gore completed her postgraduate voice studies at the Australian National University in Canberra and at the National Opera Studio in London. She has won numerous prestigious opera awards, including two Helpmann Awards (2017 and 2018), a Green Room Award (2018), the Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship (AOAC), the Opera Awards, the Covent Garden National Opera Studio Scholarship, 2nd prize in the Herald-Sun Aria (2002 and 2004), and first place in the Australian National Aria Competition.

Lorina joined Opera Australia as a principal artist in 2008 and has since performed many roles for the company including: Violetta (La traviata), Marie (Wozzeck), Roxana (King Roger), Leïla (Les pêcheurs de perles), Amina (La sonnambula), Musetta (La bohème), Queen of Night (Die Zauberflöte), Die Fiakermilli (Arabella), Tytania (Midsummer Night’s Dream), Honey B (Bliss), Yum-Yum (The Mikado), Despina (Cosi fan tutte), Oscar (Un ballo in maschera), Marzelline (Fidelio), and Woglinde (Der Ring des Nibelungen). International operatic roles include Lucia di Lammermoor for Iford Arts, Die Fiakermilli (Arabella) for Garsington Opera, Giulia (La Scala di Seta) for Independent Opera, Blonde (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Agilea (Teseo) and Sandrina (L'infedeltà delusa) for English Touring Opera, and performances of Norina (Don Pasquale) and Violetta (La traviata) for New Zealand Opera.

Recordings include: A Toast to Melba and also Johann Strauss: Waltzes and Arias with Marko Letonja and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for ABC Classics, highlights from Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier with Yvonne Kenny, Bliss with Opera Australia, and Handel's Rodelinda conducted by Maestro Richard Bonynge.

EMily Sun - Violin

‘Possessed of a superb talent’ (The Australian), with ‘a searing and poetic tone’ (The Guardian), Emily Sun’s powerful sound and compelling interpretations have earned her international renown, winning the Royal Overseas League Competition (UK), ABC Young Performers Award (Australia), and performing in Europe, the UK, and Asia with conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, Tan Dun and Howard Griffiths.

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Artist-in-Association in 2023, featuring the critically acclaimed world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin’s violin concerto, Fantasie im Wintergarten, Emily continues in this role in 2024, performing with conductors Andrew Litton, and Shiyeon Siung, and performs as soloist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Johannes Fritzsch. Recent performances include as soloist with the Sydney, Melbourne and West Australian Symphony Orchestras with conductors Asher Fisch, Mark Wigglesworth, Jaime Martín, and Benjamin Northey; the Classic100 concert broadcast on ABC iView, Australian Festival of Classical Music, Musica Viva Tasmania, and more.

Guest soloist with the London Mozart Players, the European Union Chamber Orchestra, Qingdao Symphony Orchestra, and alongside Maxim Vengerov at Buckingham Palace, Emily’s recordings include Nocturnes (ABC Classic) nominated for a 2021 ARIA award, and as part of Ensemble Émigré (Rubicon Classics). Her highly anticipated next album is due for October 2025 release (ABC Classic). Emily is a Violin Professor at the Royal College of Music London, and performs on a 1753 G.B. Guadagnini ‘The Adelaide’ violin, generously loaned to her by the UKARIA Cultural Trust.

HELEN AYRES - VIOLIN

Helen Ayres is a Doctoral graduate of the University of Melbourne and current violin teacher at the Open Music Academy, University of Adelaide. She is a core Leader of the Adelaide Hills Chamber players and has appeared as guest with numerous Australian ensembles including Flinders Quartet, Syzygy, the Australian Octet and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Helen held a permanent position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and has since performed in England, Scotland, Germany, Austria and China with the BBC Scottish Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestra. As a founding member of Seraphim Trio Helen has commissioned new works by Brett Dean, James Ledger and Adelaide’s Jakob Jankowski and has performed at various Australian festivals with musicians Paul Kelly, Lucinda Collins, Konstantin Shamray and Andrew Haveron. Helen is regularly broadcast on ABC and MBS-FM radio stations and is also a presenter for Radio 5MBS-FM in Adelaide. Helen is passionate about increasing performance opportunities for young Australian musicians. To this end she is appears on the board of Recitals Australia, Radio 5MBS-FM and convenes the String and Ensemble Divisions of the Adelaide Eisteddfod Society.

Jacqui Cronin - Viola

Violist, Jacqui Cronin, has performed widely throughout Australia with numerous ensembles and orchestras, including the Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Opera Australia Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. Most recently she has appeared as Guest Associate Principal Viola of the Opera Australia Orchestra. Jacqui is also an active chamber musician, performing regularly in festivals across Australia, and with the Sydney Omega Ensemble, Sonus Piano Quartet and the Seraphim Trio.

TIMOTHY NANKERVIS - CELLO

Timothy Nankervis is a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has won numerous awards for cello solo, and for chamber music as a member of the acclaimed Seraphim Trio. As an active chamber musician, Tim has performed extensively with Seraphim Trio nationally and internationally. He also performs regularly as a guest artist with various ensembles.

Tim has performed widely throughout Australia as a soloist, and has broadcast regularly for the ABC and MBS-FM radio stations across the country. He has performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto and Brahms Double Concerto with orchestras in Sydney and Queensland, and he has performed as soloist with Orchestra Victoria, playing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Tim performs regularly with the Australian World Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and he has performed casually with the Melbourne, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. He has taught cello and chamber music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and tutors regularly for Sydney Youth Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra.

David Griffiths - Clarinet

David Griffiths is a member of two of Australia’s leading chamber music ensembles, the Australia Ensemble @ UNSW and Ensemble Liaison. He also holds the position of Associate Director and Associate Professor of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, the University of Melbourne. A passionate performer and educator, he has presented performances and masterclasses in Asia, Europe, United States, the Middle East, New Zealand and Australia including a critically acclaimed debut in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. As a soloist he has appeared with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Australia Ensemble @ UNSW, Shanghai Radio Orchestra, Macau Orchestra and the Real Filharmonía de Galicia. As a member of Ensemble Liaison, he curates and performs an annual three-concert series at the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall at the Melbourne Recital Centre which is currently in its 18th season. He has also performed with the New Zealand, Goldner, Tinalley, Arcacia, Flinders and Australian String Quartets, the New York Wind Soloists, and the Southern Cross Soloists. He has collaborated with many leading artists including Nemanja Radulović, Ray Chen, Anthony Marwood, Henning Kraggerud and Emma Matthews, and has appeared at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville, Port Fairy Festival, Lucerne Festival, Switzerland and the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan.

Some recent highlights include a performance of John Adams’ Gnarly Buttons Clarinet Concerto with the Australia Ensemble @ UNSW, the Weiland Concerto with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, a collaboration with accordion virtuoso James Crabb, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and Concerto at the 3MBS Mozart Marathon and the complete chamber works of Brahms in one day at UKARIA in collaboration with Timothy Young, Svetlana Bogosavljevic and the Australian String Quartet.

1ST OF 5 NIGHTS AT QT QUEENSTOWN

QUEENSTOWN:

Arrive at QT Queenstown. Hotel check-in is from 3:00pm, and we recommend arriving at this time.

In the late afternoon we gather as a group for the first time and make the coach journey from our hotel to the stunning Kamana Lakehouse, our main performance venue for the Music & Mountains Festival. Here we are welcomed by our Artistic Director Anna Goldsworthy, who will give a short introduction to our exciting program of music.

We enjoy pre-concert drinks and canapés from The Ledge, a spacious terrace overlooking magnificent Lake Wakatipu, as the changing colours of dusk are reflected in its waters. We then settle in - glass in hand - for the first of our gala evening performances as part of the Music & Mountains Festival in New Zealand.

Following this morning’s concert conversation, we return to our hotel.

This afternoon guests have some free time to begin their exploration of the beautiful lakeside town of Queenstown. Situated on the shore of Lake Wakatipu and overlooked by the astonishing Remarkables Mountains on the far shore. You can explore the town, or for those with a head for heights, there’s the Skyline Queenstown, the Southern Hemisphere’s steepest gondola, taking you to spectacular views of the surrounding country.

This evening we meet at our hotel for the first of our fascinating presentations, providing illuminating background to the music we are about to hear. Following our pre-concert talk, we travel to Kamana Lakehouse for the second of our gala evening concerts.

3RD OF 5 NIGHTS AT QT QUEENSTOWN

QUEENSTOWN & LAKE WANAKA:

After breakfast, we set out on a luxury coach trip to the lakeside town of Wanaka.

We travel on the Crown Range Road, the highest paved road in New Zealand, which offers spectacular mountain scenery. After we arrive at stunning Rippon Vineyard with its panoramic views of vineyards running down to the shores of Lake Wanaka, we settle in for the first of our morning concert conversations. This morning’s concert at Rippon Hall takes place with the shimmering Lake Wanaka and its surrounding mountains as a backdrop.

After our exclusive morning performance, we sample some of Rippon Vineyard’s award-winning biodynamic wines. Rippon Vineyard was voted No. 13 in the World’s Best Wineries in 2020 by a wine academy comprising more than 500 leading wine experts, sommeliers and travel correspondents from across the globe.

From here, we take a short journey to Wanaka for a delicious group lunch together. Following lunch, we return to our hotel.

In the early evening we gather once again for the second of our musical presentations. Following the talk, we journey back to Kamana Lakehouse for our dusk sojourn on The Ledge for our pre-concert drinks, before we enjoy the third of our gala evening performances.

This morning we make our way to Kamana Lakehouse for our third and final concert conversation.

Following our morning concert conversation, we take the scenic drive through the cascading hills to Arrowtown, a picturesque historic Chinese Settlement and gold-mining town situated on the banks of the Arrow River. Time is allowed for a ramble through its beautiful streets and to peruse its boutique shops, before convening at the award-winning restaurant Aosta for a multi-course feast. Aosta serves food inspired by the cooking techniques of Northern Italy, paired with ingredients carefully selected from growers, breeders, suppliers and wine grown on the land around Central Otago and Arrowtown.

Following lunch we return to Queenstown and to our hotel.

In the early evening we come together for our third musical presentation, exploring another element of our musical journey. Following the talk, we make our way back to Kamana Lakehouse for our fourth gala evening concert.

DAY 5 | Saturday 13 April 2024

5TH OF 5 NIGHTS AT QT QUEENSTOWN

QUEENSTOWN:

This morning is free for you to continue your exploration of Queenstown, or to relax and soak in the view at our comfortable hotel. You might like to visit the tranquil Queenstown Gardens, a botanic garden containing a variety of exotic and native trees, located in the heart of town. It is a pretty place to go for a stroll, visit the rose garden and the water feature, or to simply sit down and enjoy the surroundings.

In the late morning, we board our privately chartered boat for a lunchtime cruise on beautiful Lake Wakatipu. We will see the towering peaks that surround the lake from the water, and will enjoy local wines accompanied by a selection of antipasto platters on board as we take in the dramatic scenery. Following our cruise, we return to our hotel.

This evening, we gather for one final presentation, wrapping up the musical wonders we have experienced in Queenstown. We then journey one final time to Kamana Lakehouse for our final pre-concert drinks reception, and our last gala evening concert.
