Celebrating his 50th birthday, Maxim Vengerov, ‘the world's greatest violinist’ (The Times) and the multi-award-winning superstar of the classical world, takes the stage of the Sydney Opera House. Accompanied by the brilliant pianist Polina Osetinskaya, the two will delight with a program including works by Ravel, Franck and Prokofiev.

TOUR LEADER

GRAHAM ABBOTT

Sydney-born Graham Abbott is a Music Education graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium and later studied conducting with Myer Fredman. Over more than 30 years, his conducting career has seen him work with all the major Australian orchestras, opera companies and choirs. He was Conductor-in-Residence at the University of Adelaide (1986-88), Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 1993-97 and Musical Director of Melbourne Chorale (now MSO Chorus) 1994-97. In 1997, Graham was acting Chorus Master of the Chorus of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, during which time he conducted concerts with the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Ulster Orchestra. 

An experienced conductor of opera, Graham’s repertoire includes Fidelio, Aida, L'Elisir d'amore, Julius Caesar, Orlando, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, La traviata, Il trovatore, Don Pasquale, Un ballo in maschera, The Pearl Fishers and Pelléas et Mélisande. He was also Assistant Conductor for the Australian premiere season of John Adams’ Nixon in China at the 1992 Adelaide Festival. Recent engagements include The Barber of Seville for State Opera South Australia, Messiah with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and returns to the Adelaide Symphony, APO, Festival of Voices, Hobart.

Graham is also one of Australia's most highly-respected music educators. He presented Keys to Music on ABC Classic from 2003 to 2017 and is in demand as a speaker and teacher around Australia. He also established Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Unwrap the Music series and continued to conduct that series until 2022.

DAY 1 | THURSDAY 8 August 2024

1ST OF 3 NIGHTS AT INTERCONTINENTAL SYDNEY

ARRIVE SYDNEY & OPERA PERFORMANCE (C):

Guests arrive at the luxury 5-star InterContinental Sydney, set within the beautifully restored Treasury Building of 1851. It is conveniently positioned in the heart of Sydney’s CBD and has panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. Check-in is at 3:00pm and we recommend arriving at this time.

In the late afternoon, we gather for the first of our talks with our distinguished Tour Leader Graham Abbott. This talk will cover the opera we will hear this evening, Mozart’s luminous Così fan tutte. Following our talk, we enjoy a welcome drinks and canapés reception to meet our fellow guests.

After getting to know our fellow guests and Tour Leader, we depart for the short, picturesque walk to the iconic Sydney Opera House for the first of our performances. This evening, in the Joan Sutherland Theatre, we enjoy Opera Australia’s production of Così fan tutte.

MORNING TALK, Q&A, LUNCH & ORCHESTRAL PERFORMANCE (B, L):

This morning, following a delicious breakfast at our 5-star hotel, we enjoy the second of our morning talks with Tour Leader Graham Abbott. In this morning’s talk, Graham will cover the music we will hear over the following two days, this evening’s concert with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and tomorrow’s recital with violinist Maxim Vengerov and pianist Polina Osetinskaya.

Following our talk, we will be joined by one of the singers from last night’s opera performance for an exclusive Q&A hosted by Graham Abbott. We will be able to find out more about singing Mozart and performing on the stage of the Sydney Opera House, with ample opportunity allowed for guests to ask questions of their own.

Following our enlightening morning discussions, we gather at one of Sydney’s finest dining establishments for a delicious 3-course lunch overlooking the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour.

Following our lunch together, we return to our hotel to rest ahead of this evening’s concert. Alternatively, rather than returning to the hotel, you might like to visit the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art, located just a short walk from our hotel. The Museum of Contemporary Art, with its perfect location overlooking Circular Quay is the most visited contemporary art museum in the world and houses a great free permanent collection and a constantly changing series of visiting exhibitions.

This evening, we attend an orchestral performance at the Sydney Opera House by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and violin sensation Augustin Hadelich.

3RD OF 3 NIGHTS AT INTERCONTINENTAL SYDNEY

VIOLIN RECITAL AND FAREWELL DINNER (B, D):

This morning is free to enjoy our comfortable hotel, or to do some more exploring of Sydney. Guests might like to visit the nearby Museum of Sydney, celebrating the city’s rich history, or wander a little further afield through The Domain to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. At the time of our tour, the exhibition Alphonse Mucha - Spirit of Art Nouveau will be showing, showcasing the work of one of art’s great stylistic innovators, Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) who created some of the most instantly recognisable and best-loved works in modern European art.

Following our free morning, we return to the Sydney Opera House for one last performance, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear violinist Maxim Vengerov in recital, with pianist Polina Osetinskaya, performing works by Ravel, Franck and Prokofiev.
